Tokyo Toilets | Documentary

Tokyo Toilets is a documentary exploring one of the most compelling urban design initiatives of recent years. Launched in Shibuya, Tokyo, by The Nippon Foundation in collaboration with the Shibuya City Government and the Shibuya Tourism Association, the project reimagines 17 public toilets through the work of leading contemporary architects and designers.

The film approaches each facility as a distinct character, shaped by its own identity and atmosphere, enhanced through a curated soundtrack. Moving from a brief historical introduction—evoked through black-and-white, postcard-like imagery—the narrative unfolds as a journey through this urban microcosm, examining not only form and function but also the ways these small architectures engage with the city's social fabric.

Each intervention condenses function into a precise architectural gesture, generating diverse spatial experiences within Shibuya’s dense, layered urban context. In a metropolis like Tokyo—where histories, scales, and atmospheres overlap—Tokyo Toilets reveals how even the most modest structures can contribute to the city's richness, adding yet another layer to its complex and evolving landscape.
